feel pain during penetration

feel pain during penetration

Question
We have had a wonderful sex life; we never had a problem until three years ago when my husband took tablets for lowering cholesterol, which caused us not to have sex for about a year. When we tried again I found it very painful not through dryness that’s taken care of with a gel, but it feels like a very fine ring around the outside edge of the vagina. So fine it is like a piece of nylon. It’s like being cut with a knife on penetration.I’ve heard of vaginismus but that’s not what I’m feeling. Can you explain it?

Answer

I'm sorry to hear this has happened.Let's begin with the medication which your husband took. Presumably you're saying that it made him impotent for a while? Certainly quite a lot of medically prescribed drugs can do that. So when you 'resumed' after a year, your vagina was really out of practice. In addition, you were by then some years past the menopauseInevitably therefore, you would have some degree of vaginal shrinkage - especially as it appears that you're not on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). My guess (and let's bear in mind that I haven't examined you!) is that you probably need some of the female hormone oestrogen applied round the opening of your vagina for a while. But what you need to do now is to go to a doctor, or a Family Planning clinic or (best of all) a menopause clinic to see if I'm right. If I am, then they will give you good advice about the optimum way to use female hormones - so as to get your vagina in tip-top condition again.
